Nocturnes

The twilight hour slips away and the moon begins to rise.  Color fades and edges blur. The spirit of light is veiled in mystery and shadow. George Inness, probably the nineteenth century's most influential American landscape painter, was a premier tonalist, and his moody works were described by Elliott Daingerfield (in 1915) like this: "Surely no painter has ever more perfectly caught the mystery of that light which is of, and yet beyond, the skies!"
